During the last ten years the changes in Vietnam have been dramatic, with a strong reduction in poverty and increased productivity, both in agriculture and industry. Many governmental and nongovernmental development agencies are working in Vietnam, and their support will still be needed. Vietnam’s history is exciting, and sometimes tragic. Centuries of colonial rule still have an evident impact. But today the tales coming from Vietnam are more about its magnificent nature, beautiful beaches, great cultural heritage, and last but not least, about 80 million people who through great effort and enthusiasm are striving to make a bright future for themselves. Vietnam is still one of the world’s poorest nations, but it is rich in extraordinary experiences and contagious humour. With its narrow streets and location on the Thu Bon river Hoi An is in our eyes the best place to live in Vietnam. The town enjoys a tropical climate and is situated just south of Danang, halfway down the long Vietnamese east coast. The former trading town with its old houses and slow pace of life was from the 15th century to the beginning of the 19th a centre of trade and a winter port for traders from all over Asia. This made the town a meeting point between various cultures, which is still evident in the people and the architecture of Hoi An. Hoi An is only a few hours from mountains and highlands and the old imperial city of Hue. A short bike-ride takes you to the white sands of the beach.
STUDY CENTRE
The study centre is located on Cua Dai beach, four km. outside town. On a bicycle it takes you 15-20 minutes, passing through a beautiful landscape of green rice fields, water buffalos and villages.
ACCOMMODATION
In Hoi An we live in two small hotels close to the centre of the town with comfortable two or threebed rooms that are equipped with airconditioning and a bathroom with toilet. Since Hoi An is a small town everything is within walking distance, but most students buy a bicycle. Necessary facilities such as restaurants, Internet, banks, post office, doctor, hospital etc. are within easy reach. There are also a few bars and cafés with good music
