Cape Coast is known as the city of knowledge. The city prides itself of the first school in Ghana, and is still home to one of the country’s main universities, University of Cape Coast. The people of Cape Coast are said to be “to known”; they know it all it seems. The concept of braindrain, however, is perhaps a more accurate description of the current situation in Cape Coast, as educated people tend to leave the city. Still, most people speak English, whether educated or not. Apart from English, Fante - one of the four main languages of Ghana - is widely spoken. Typical of Fante is the tendency to use a large amount of English words, the cause of which is probably the great influence of the British in this area. Cape Coast Castle was once the last many Africans ever saw of their own continent as they where taken away to America to become slaves. The castle is now converted into a museum that offers an insight into the brutal history of the region. Moreover, it boasts a splendid view of the ocean, the beach and the city itself. Surely worth a visit!
Living quarters and private life. When school is out the time belongs to you. Our student accommodations are located in the centre of Cape Coast, and if you chose to spend time in and around the city, you will find a lot of good places to hang out. On Sundays a large marked is held in Kotokuruba, in the city centre. Here shopping, or simply just looking, is an experience in itself. Cape Coast also offers good opportunities for a variety of sporting activities, both within the city itself and on the university campus just out of the centre. In the area around Cape Coast you will also find a lot of exiting places to visit during weekends.
The Study Centre is located on the beach near the village of Brenu, about 20 kilometres west of Cape Coast. Here, we have built simple classrooms with thatched roofs that allow the cool breeze inside during lectures, seminars, or quiet reading. The centre also has a cafeteria that serves your breakfast and lunch on workdays. As you can see from the pictures the beach is extraordinary beautiful, and close to pristine. There, you can walk for hours without meeting anybody, or simply take a nap in a hammock under the palm trees. Our School bus brings us safely to this beautiful spot every morning, and back again in the afternoon.
