About the bachelor's degree

Development studies is an interdisciplinary field of research that integrates knowledge from various academic disciplines such as social anthropology, geography, and economics.

To understand developmental processes in different parts of the world, you also need to understand the culture and the people who make up the society you are going to study.

With a global bachelor's degree, you gain international competence that will make you attractive in the job market.

Travel around the world while you study

In three years, you can experience Asia, Africa, and Latin America - while also enjoying two semesters in one of Scandinavia's best student cities, Oslo.

You start with Development Studies 1 and 2 in Vietnam and Ghana. Then you choose which and in what order you want to incorporate our other studies: Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Environmental Studies, or Power, Politics, and Religion.

You can also have a maximum of one semester of Spanish credited.

Compared to participating in an exchange program through an agreement your university has with foreign institutions, you will have a Norwegian organization with local staff supporting you throughout all your stays abroad.

We have local employees in all countries of study who know the area well, making it easier for you to integrate into the local community and get under the skin of the culture in your country of study.

Career opportunities

Many wonder what they can become if they study development studies. There is not one answer to this, but many.

By studying development in developing countries, you gain a unique international competence that is sought after in the workforce, for example in tourism, aid, or education.

Since you get to experience the various issues firsthand and get close to the everyday life in the countries you study in, you are in a stronger position than students who have not studied abroad.

Perhaps you would like to become a journalist, researcher, work in a non-profit organization, or at an embassy? Then an education in development studies might be something for you.

Rice fields

One of the distinctive aspects of Hoi An is its agriculture, with expansive rice fields located right on the outskirts of the city. Cycle around these fields to gain insight into the everyday life of many residents in Hoi An, observing where and how the vegetables and herbs you are served are harvested. Among the rice fields in An My, you will also discover a yoga studio and cafes where you can relax and enjoy the sea breeze.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Hoi An Ancient Town holds World Heritage status for good reason. Narrow streets are illuminated by an array of colorful lanterns, and tourist attractions and Western-oriented restaurants coexist alongside local businesses, historic wooden houses, and temples. There is nothing quite like a nighttime stroll through the old town, where you are guaranteed to be enchanted by the magical atmosphere along the Thu Bon River.

Cerro Chirripó

Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica's highest mountain, reaches an impressive 3,820 meters above sea level. Though the hike is demanding, it is truly rewarding, offering breathtaking views at the top.

Football match at La Bombonera

As a student in Buenos Aires, you can't miss the opportunity to experience the electrifying atmosphere at La Boca Juniors' home ground, La Bombonera. The intense passion Argentines have for football is truly contagious, even for those not particularly interested in sports.

The Casa Rosada - the Pink House - is the presidential palace of Argentina. This magnificent building is one of the country's most recognizable, thanks in large part to its unusual color scheme. The palace also houses a museum displaying artifacts belonging to past presidents.

Kakum national park

In this vast national park, elephants roam among the lush vegetation. Take a hike across the suspension bridge (if you're not afraid of heights), and sleep in a treetop hut under the stars.

Scholarship opportunities

Each semester, we offer a select few local students the opportunity to take part in the course through our scholarship programme.

You must be a national of the country of study to be eligible.

The deadline to apply is 1 June for the autumn semester, and 1 November for the spring semester.
